What are the benefits of planning a funeral in advance?

One of the major benefits of having a pre-arranged funeral plan is removing administration around the arrangements, allowing your executors to grieve and pay their respects in the knowledge that your wishes are being carried out.

You can decide on every aspect of your funeral. What type of service you would like, which funeral director you would prefer, whether you want a cremation or burial, if you want flowers or donations to a charity, are all things that can be handled in advance which means your loved ones don’t need to second guess what you would have wanted.

We aim to offer you peace of mind through certainty and control over your affairs through our funeral planning services.

Does pre-planning and pre-paying for your funeral make financial sense?

Every year the price of funerals is increasing, much faster than the annual rate of inflation. The Sun Life Cost of Dying Report 2018 said that the average cost of a basic funeral rose from £3,897 in 2016, to £4,080 in 2017 – an increase of 4.7% – compared to the current Bank of England Consumers Pricing Inflation at 3%.

This means that for many families budgeting for a funeral by traditional means may no longer be sufficient to cover the funeral costs.

By arranging your guaranteed funeral now, you pay at today’s guaranteed prices, avoiding the inevitable future rises in costs. Funeral Plans pay out before the funeral directly to your selected funeral directors, which means neither your executors nor family need to find the capital or borrow against the estate (at penal rates of interest), whilst negotiating with the funeral directors, for the services required. Not all plans guarantee to pay all the costs, so care must be taken when choosing a plan.

What are the options for planning to pay for my funeral in advance?

We know there are many good reasons for planning for your own funeral but doing so doesn’t mean you are restricted to buying an “off the shelf” package from one of the many providers currently offering funeral plans.

Of course, these can be the best solution for some people but they need to be fully researched to ensure your cash is protected over time, and the plan is sustainable. For some people, a better option could be a life assurance plan, self-provision (through a savings account, for example) or a dedicated over 50’s plan. Money held in cash as a deposit may be tied up until probate and is unlikely to keep pace with inflation or increasing costs.

At Westminster Wills Ltd.™ we can talk you through all these options to help you decide what is the best choice for you and your family.

Why is a bespoke funeral plan better than buying a comprehensive plan?

There are literally hundreds of Funeral Plans on offer which generally offer three or four basic types of cover – low, medium and high – each with increasing costs and their a range of cover and services. Basically, the higher the price the more services can be made available, under their contract, and their contractual terms are specific.

The current premium for what is often advertised as a “comprehensive” funeral plan will cost around £4,000 and varies with each package, but may not guarantee to cover all third-party costs (or disbursements) such as minister’s service, cremation / burial fees or the plot itself. This can mean payouts can fall significantly short of actual costs. These exclusions are sometimes not properly explained or understood when the plan is arranged causing upset further down the line.

Westminster Wills Ltd.™ Pre-Arranged Funeral Plans are not restricted to any one provider and can assess and assist on all your financial matters so that you are able to make well informed decisions for you and your family.
